American-made quality at an entry-level price.Resurrecting one of the most popular electric guitars in Gibson’s history, the Melody Maker is an accurate, affordable re-creation of the original Melody Makers of the late 1950s. Originally introduced as a student model, much like the Les Paul Junior, the Melody Maker became a player’s favorite for its light weight, comfortable neck, and great tone. Today’s Melody Maker Les Paul guitar is no exception. With a slim, light, mahogany body and set mahogany neck; period-correct pickguard housing a special design single-coil pickup; vintage-style wraparound tailpiece; rounded neck profile, and rosewood fingerboard; the Melody Maker is an unbelievable value for players of all ages, styles, and skill levels.

What should my next guitar be?

I’m a moderately advanced guitar player. I play in a ska band, but in my spare time I pretty much play blues/60’s rock type stuff. A lot of eric clapton. Right now I play an epiphone les paul I’ve had for four years or so.

I’m leaning toward a Gibson ES-335 or a tele. Please give support for your answers!!!

The Gibson ES-335 and the Tele are both guitars that are going to deliver a strong clean tone, but might lack body or clarity if you choose to add gain or distortion.

That being said, the two styles of music that you mention you play could potentially need both clean and distorted tones. Ska needs solid clean tone for the rhythm upstrokes, but could need distortion for solos. Blues might need slight gain for the crunchy sounding rhythm parts, and could go either clean or distorted for solos.

That being said, it may be important to decide what aspect of your playing is more important to you, because it’s going to be a balancing act to decide what to buy and you don’t want to regret your decision. In my opinion, if you go with an American made Tele, that might do everything that you need it to do. I’m saying this because I own a Mexican Tele, and it sounds great clean and horrible distorted, but the American made ones use different wood, pickups and electronics, and they can handle distortion a lot better.

As alternates, here are some other options you could go with and my opinion on their pros and cons in your situation:

Fender Stratocaster (American) – This is THE quintessential blues guitar, played by Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy…almost everybody. A Fender Strat with a little gain is the exact blues rock sound you’ve been hearing for ages. However, the downside for your situation is that a clean tone from a Strat will always have more body and push than from a Tele. With a little experimentation you might be able to get a good clean tone for ska, but that’s not the tone the guitar is built for.

Paul Reed Smith – PRS guitars are all works of art. The have a great fat distorted tone, sing loud and clear when clean, and you can flip back and forth between single coil coil and humbucker pickups. The downside is the price tag.

Gibson Les Paul – I know you own an Epiphone Les Paul right now, but the real deal Gibson Les Paul is definitely a step up. I’ve seen a lot of both blues rock and ska players that use Gibson’s – they distort great, and their clean tone is pretty flexible. Downsides are the price tag, and they’re really heavy.

How Guitars Work

Many people, guitarists included, have probably wondered how exactly guitars work. However, they probably also are confused by all of the terms used to describe how a guitar produces the sound we hear. There is quite a bit of physics involved in it, and those who haven’t taken a day of physics in their life probably wouldn’t understand it. This is where this article comes in handy. In this article, we will describe how both Acoustic and Electric guitars work in terms that everyone will understand.

How the Acoustic Works:

To start with, when a string vibrates (when you play it), it produces vibration at a certain frequency. The frequency at which a string vibrates is determined by the weight, length, and tension of the string.

The body of the guitar takes in the vibration of the strings and then puts the sound out into the air. This is the sound that is heard when the guitar string is played.

On an Acoustic guitar, there is a soundhole. This soundhole serves to amplify the sound of the vibration produced by the strings. Without the soundhole, the sound would be practically inaudible, which is the case with a solid body Electric guitar.

To alter the length (and therefore change the sound that is heard) of the string, you’ll alter the tension of the string. You do this by pressing down on the string on any of the frets and then playing that string. Doing so changes the frequency of the vibration, which, in turn, alters the sound that is heard.

How the Electric guitar Works:

Electric guitars really aren’t that much different from Acoustic guitars. In fact, the main difference between the two is that one is made of solid wood (with no holes), while the other has a hollow-body (with a soundhole). How Electric guitars work is a bit different than how Acoustic guitars do.

Just like with the Acoustic guitar, when a string is played, it vibrates. That vibration produces the sound that we hear. The frequency of the vibration is, again, determined by the weight, length and tension of the string.

With no soundhole, the Electric guitar is unable to self-amplify the sound produced by the vibration of the strings. Thus, the sound heard from an un-amplified Electric guitar is minimal. This is why guitar pickups and amplifiers are necessary to produce the sound loud enough for people to hear.

Pickups basically take the vibration of the strings and convert it into a useable electrical current. This current is then fed into the amplifier by way of a cable which is then interpreted by the amplifier. The sound that results comes out of the amplifier speaker.

Amplifiers that have pre-built distortion (and practically all of them do now) can distort the electrical current (vibration) by clipping it. The sound that results from this clipping is what is called distortion.

Other types of guitar effects found on amps and pedals do pretty much the same thing—they alter the electrical current which is fed to them by the pickups of the guitar.

And there you have it. That is, in a nutshell, exactly how guitars work. No physics necessary.

Acoustic guitars and their various musical relatives can be traced back thousands of years, but the idea of a guitar using electric currents to amplify its sound had to wait until the 1930s to start to take root. Necessity was, perhaps, the mother of invention here, as the volume of the guitar, used previously in blues and jazz, could not compete with the new sounds of the big band and the shriek of brass instruments. Early experiments with simply adding microphones to guitars had only limited success, partly due to the quality of the tone and partly because of the feedback that could occur as soon as a reasonable volume was reached. The breakthrough came when Les Paul, a jazz guitarist, successfully experimented with a magnetic pickup system that could convert the vibrations of the strings to an electrical signal to be amplified and sent to a speaker. Soon, guitarists started adding pickups to their hollow-bodied guitars, but in fact there was no need for an electric guitar to have a hollow body, as the pickups could detect very subtle vibrations and amplify them anyway. Before long, Fender, Rickenbacker and, of course, Gibson were producing solid-bodied electric guitars.

Innovations unique to the electric guitar

Electric guitars allowed many innovations that would go on to define their sound. Most noticeably was the fact that volume and tone controls could be added to the electronics between the pickup and the cable, which meant that the accomplished guitarist could adjust the tone and loudness whilst on stage. Second and third pickups were added at various points along the body to take advantage of the difference in tone at various points along the strings, and these could be blended together with multiple controls. The tremolo arm appeared, allowing notes to be bent down or up (before, they could only be bent upwards by pulling the string away from its natural line, thus tightening it). The tremolo arm was part of the early sound of rock ’n’ roll, and could make a vibrato sound or create the long, sustained, wailing sounds associated with Jimi Hendrix. Other sound effects, such as chorus, overdrive, vibrate, wah-wah, reverb and delay (echo) could also be controlled via foot pedals by the player, further adding to the variety of sounds available. The pickup was also applied to bass guitars, and is now seen on violins, mandolins, cellos and many other types of string instrument.

Musical styles using electric guitars

The genres of music that use electric guitars are too numerous for this article, but their origins can be traced back to the jazz and big band sound that became popular between the wars. Blues guitarists pioneered the “dirty” sound that would later morph into heavy metal, and no rock and roll group would be complete without at least one electric guitar. Bob Dylan was once called “Judas” by a heckler when he swapped his acoustic for an electric on stage, a significant moment in electric folk. The sixties saw mainstream pop and psychedelic bands putting the instrument to good use, and disco, punk, ska and reggae music of the seventies used the instrument’s inherent rhythm; a lively and thriving African sound is once of the guitar’s most innovative current streams. Whenever a new technology has come along, especially the electronic revolution of the late 1970s and 1980s, people have written off the electric guitar, but it shows no sign of losing popularity.

There are many people out there who want to learn to play guitar. Are you one of them? It is a very popular instrument, and many people, ranging from the business person to the wannabe rocker, would like to acquire the skill to be able to strum their favorite song. This dream does not just have to stay a dream. It can become a reality if you really want it to be. You simply need to find good instruction.

Where do you find this instruction? Everyone learns differently, so there are several different options for you to choose from. You just have to choose the one that works best for you.

If you prefer to study on your own and you like to read, you might be able to learn to play guitar from one of the self-guidance books that are on the market. There are many of them to choose from, and you can generally find a book or two that will meet your experience level and that provides you with part of the information that you need. Of course, if you do not study effectively with books, this probably is not the best option for you. And how are you supposed to know what you’re supposed to sound like from a book? It is also important to make sure that you are reading all of the information exactly right, so you do not form bad habits without realizing it. Forming bad habits can make it really difficult to perfect your skill later down the road.

Another way that you can learn to play guitar is by working with a local music teacher. Local music teachers can provide you with experience, such as shortcuts or tricks to make strumming chords and the like a lot easier. However, getting one-on-one, personalized attention can be expensive. It may be even be more costly if you are struggling with something new and difficult, and you end up spending more than one session to eventually master the skill. You may also want to consider attending group lessons, where you can gain much from the students as well as the teacher. One downside, though, is that you have to learn at everyone’s pace, and you do not get as much as attention with the larger class.

Pro Guitar Tips offers a program to learn to play guitar that is downloadable. Created by professional rock musician Pete Williamson, the program is a multimedia experience that provides pictures, chord diagrams, audio, and various tips for mastering the instrument. The program is meant for beginners up to expert level. The program also includes bonus tips in how to break into the music industry. Visit http://www.pro-guitar-tips.com to purchase the course or get more information. Pete Williamson has more than 20 years of experience as a guitarist. He currently performs with the multi-platinum band Pete Murray & the Stonemasons, and rock band Mammal.
